Evaluating the use of biofilter as a pre-treatment step for slaughterhouse wastewater treatment

The research aims to assess the ability to treat slaughterhouse wastewater by using biofilter at one small slaughterhouse in Ben Tre province. The research was conducted by building a biofilter tank model and observing the formation of biofilm. The treatment capacity of pilot here model was explored and evaluated using four different parameters including: TSS, BOD, N-NH+4, Turbidity. The findings showed the best treatment capacity of TSS at 78.93%, BOD at 88.
77%, N-NH +4 at 87.50% and turbidity at 96.61%.However, the concentration of BOD, TSS, and Ammonia at the biofilter outlets is still higher than the values regulated in the National Technical Regulation on Industrial Wastewater of QCVN u11-200ps 40-2011/BTNMT.Therefore, biofilters should only be applied as a pretreatment step and the wastewater need to be further treated.
